The first marking period assignments have been handed out in class. The requirements are as follows:
1. Required 2 page essay on a modern Renaissance man or woman.

and a choice of 2 (TWO) additional assignments:
1. To find a current events article that can relate to something that we discussed in class - summarize and make a connection.
2. To find and explain a piece of Renaissance art or architecture
3. To explore the meaning of and translate 2 Shakespearean sonnets.

Students should see their individual teachers with any questions. Due dates are as follows:
For students who have Global Studies on a B day - Oct 19.
For students who have Global Studies on an A day - Oct 20.

This week begins on a B day.

Monday - B Day - students will take Asian geography quiz. We will continue to discuss Vietnam. For the second half of the period, students will need a print out of their lyrics for an in-class project. Lyrics should have a political or social message.

Tuesday/Wednesday - A/B - Students will continue to work on their lyrics projects and will have also continue with events in Vietnam. HW: Reading on Cuban Missile Crisis with questions (hand-out from class).

Thursday/Friday - A/B - Students will wrap up the Cold War. They will have time to complete their lyrics project or work on a review sheet for a WWII test.

Things Fall Apart

In the book, the main character Okonkwo is faced with rapidly changing surroundings. He is forced to make decisions on whether he will go with the changes, like many of his peers or if he will stand up for his way of life.

As you transitioned from junior high to high school, how did you meet the changes that you faced? Did you stand up for your beliefs and way of life or did you assimilate?

Compare your experiences to Okonkwo’s in one of two ways:

1. (3 paragraph minimum) In paragraph form, explain the changes Okonkwo must face throughout the book, including how he handled these changes. Then, explain the transformations your own life has gone through in the past few years. In a final paragraph, compare your approach to Okonkwo’s.

2. (2 timelines, 6 points on each line) In timeline form, outline the changes (in a general chronological order – no dates needed) that occurred in both your and Okonkwo’s life. Explain major events and their effects in short sentences or bullet note form. At the end of your timeline, make conclusions about the futures of both you and Okonkwo.

3. (5 points for each section) Create a Venn Diagram that compares the changes in your life to the changes in Okonkwo’s life. The headings for each section of the Venn Diagram should be as follows: “Changes Okonkwo’s Life,” “Changes in My Life,” and “Things that we have in common.” Each point should be a complete idea but it does not need to be a full sentence.

-Pick a revolution of the 18th or 19th century and explain its impact on the history of that country and of the world (1 pg typed)
-Come up with a series of comic strips that depict life in a New England factory.
-Choose a side of the heliocentric theory argument between Galileo and the Catholic Church. Explain the side’s position and their actions (you can do this in a dialogue, play or visual format).

Required Assignment

Write a well-organized essay that includes an introduction, several paragraphs addressing the task below and a conclusion.

Task - Discuss one significant battle, movement, or turning point in each of the two World Wars and what impact it had on the course of the war.
For each significant event discussed, explain how life changed for all nations and peoples involved: Politically, socially, economically and geographically.

Guidelines: In your essay be sure to -
-address all aspects of the Task
-support the events with relevant facts, examples and details
-use a logical and clear plan of action
-establish a framework that is beyond a simple restatement of the task and concluded with a summarization of the impact of the two World Wars and how they came to shape the 20th century.

NO wikipedia. 2 - 3 sources needed with a works consulted/cited page.
